The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Aimée de Mars founded her house in 2015 with a commitment to pure botanical alchemy, and Sensuel Rubis was among its earliest expressions. Named after the ruby, the fragrance captures that gemstone's radiant, sensuous red through botanical materials alone. Valérie Demars crafted it using only natural extracts, wheat-based alcohol, and spring water, translating the jewel's fiery depth into scent. Each ingredient was selected to evoke the ruby not through literalism, but through a feeling of warmth, opacity, and inner light.
The choice of Oud and Benzoin in the base reflects Aimée de Mars' philosophy of grounding florals in resinous depth. Raspberry and Gardenia keep the opening luminous, but the heart and base build toward something darker and more Intimate. Sichuan Pepper bridges these two worlds, its warmth connecting the bright top to the smoky heart. Tog ether, these notes create a fragrance that evolves constantly, never settling into a single mood.
The evolution
The fragrance opens like a ruby catching light, with Raspberry bringing a tart, glistening quality while Violet adds a soft, powdery bloom. Gardenia gives the top notes an opulent, creamy floral presence that sets the tone. As time passes, the heart deepens considerably: Oud introduces dark, smoky wood resin, Incense contributes an aromatic, almost sacred smoke, and Sichuan Pepper adds a subtle, lingering warmth. This middle phase feels like the gem turning in the hand, revealing new facets. The drydown unfolds slowly, Patchouli and Sandalwood providing a woody, earthy base before Benzoin and Vanilla take over, wrapping the wearer in a warm, vanillic embrace that endures for hours.
Cultural impact
Since its 2014 release, Sensuel Rubis has been noted for its daring blend of red fruit and oud, earning a reputation among niche enthusiasts as a polarising yet rewarding scent. Wearers often cite its meditative incense heart and the way the vanilla‑sandalwood base lingers through evening gatherings, placing it alongside the house’s other natural‑only icons.
