The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Maremosso arrived in 2024 as the newest addition to Acqua di Portofino's coastal portfolio, a lineup shaped by the brand's ongoing interest in translating shoreline atmospheres into scent. The name carries the mood of the composition: it suggests turbulent water, the chop and swell that rolls in when wind picks up along an open coast. Where the original Acqua di Portofino reads as sunrise over calm water, Maremosso is the same coast an hour later, when the breeze sharpens and the air carries brine instead of stillness. The composition leans into chypre-artig-fresh territory: grapefruit and blackcurrant cut by rosemary at the top, lavender and water lily at the heart, and a sandalwood-cedar base that anchors the whole thing in dry wood rather than damp skin.
What makes Maremosso interesting is its refusal to behave like a typical aquatic. The marine accord sits in the background, never leading. Instead, the chypre structure does the heavy lifting: blackcurrant sharpness at the top, a herbal heart built on lavender and basil rather than the expected aquatic florals, and a base that trades the usual white-musk finish for ambrette and sandalwood. The rosemary is the hinge, the detail that keeps the whole composition from sliding into predictable water-scent territory.
The evolution
The first twenty minutes are a study in controlled brightness. Grapefruit and blackcurrant crack open with that tart, almost bitter edge, then rosemary threads through to keep things herbal rather than sweet. The grapefruit has a pithy, almost bitter quality, and the blackcurrant adds a dark berry counterpoint that keeps the opening from feeling one-dimensional. By the thirty-minute mark, the marine accord has settled into the background, and the lavender and water lily arrive without fanfare, a clean floral pulse that smells less like a garden than like sheets dried outside. The basil adds a green, slightly peppery snap that keeps the heart from going soft, and the water lily drifts in without ever announcing itself as a flower.
Cultural impact
Maremosso lands in 2024 as a quieter, more grounded take on coastal scent. Rather than chasing maximum freshness and projecting loudly, this one stays close to skin and leans herbal-woody as it wears. The composition keeps its marine accord in the background while the chypre structure does the real work, a reversal of the usual aquatic formula. It's the version of coastal scent for someone who wants the atmosphere of the coast without the shout of typical marine fragrances, a scent that suggests sea air through rosemary, salt through dry wood, and breeze through herbal sharpness rather than through any obvious oceanic accord.
