The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Faro means lighthouse in Italian. The name says everything: guidance, warmth, a beacon visible from miles away. In 2018, Maurizio Cerizza created this fragrance for Acqua di Portofino. Cerizza built it around citrus and spice first, then grounded everything in Mediterranean botanicals, olive leaf, mineral notes, magnolia. The opening is bright and assertive, grapefruit cutting through with sharp clarity while ginger adds a clean, peppery heat that doesn't let up. There's an immediate vibrancy that grabs attention without being harsh. As the top notes settle, the heart reveals its complexity, mineral accents emerge alongside the softer floral presence of magnolia, while olive leaf brings an herbal green depth that anchors the composition.
He selected fresh grapefruit, Calabrian bergamot, ginger, and lime to open the composition with a bright, effervescent burst that feels both clean and warm. The citrus doesn't simply sit on the surface, it weaves together, each note lending the others a sharper or softer quality depending on how the light catches it. Ginger brings a subtle spiced edge, a warmth that keeps the brightness from feeling fleeting. As the fragrance develops, the citrus softens but remains present, evolving into a rounder, more textured character where mineral and green notes emerge beneath the surface.
The evolution
The opening is all citrus and spice, grapefruit and lime punch through, with ginger adding a clean heat that surprises. It doesn't ease in. It arrives. Within minutes, the mineral and aquatic notes emerge. This is where the fragrance changes course. The citrus doesn't disappear, but it makes room for something cooler, wetter, almost metallic. Magnolia and olive leaf add softness and green depth. By the mid-drydown, the citrus has faded and the warm notes take over. White musk and amber create a skin-close warmth that doesn't compete with anything. Patchouli lingers in the background, subtle and dry. The sillage stays close to the skin, creating an intimate bubble of scent around you. It's a presence you notice, something that draws people in when they come close, without announcing itself to an entire room. The fragrance lingers where you live rather than where you pass through.
Cultural impact
Faro arrived in 2018 with grapefruit, lime, bergamot, ginger, olive leaf, magnolia, mineral notes, white musk, amber, and patchouli. The citrus and spice open with a bright, assertive character that doesn't dissipate quickly. Mediterranean botanicals ground the composition in green, herbal depth while mineral notes add a cool, textured quality beneath the surface warmth. White musk and amber create a skin-close base, with patchouli lingering subtly in the background. It's a fragrance that builds character over time rather than presenting everything at once.
