The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Olivier Cresp, working with Marie Salamagne, built this fragrance around three materials: patchouli, vanilla absolute, and orris absolute. The composition draws on each ingredient's distinct character, letting them express themselves without relying on a long list of supporting notes. Patchouli provides an earthy, grounding quality that opens the scent. Vanilla absolute brings warmth and a rich, enveloping sweetness. Orris absolute adds a powdery, floral depth that elevates the blend into something more complex. Together, these three create a fragrance that feels intentional and complete, where each material plays a role in shaping the overall experience.
The three materials interact in ways that highlight their individual qualities. Patchouli anchors the blend with its earthy, grounding presence. Vanilla absolute introduces a warm, sweet richness that fills the composition. Orris absolute adds a delicate, powdery floral quality that brings elegance and nuance. Each ingredient contributes something distinct to the overall scent, creating a balanced interplay between earthiness, warmth, and softness.
The evolution
Patchouli opens the scent with an earthy, grounded presence. Within minutes, vanilla arrives, warm and sweet, adding richness without overwhelming. It sits alongside the patchouli rather than replacing it. The combination develops as you wear it. Iris follows, bringing a powdery softness that makes the blend feel warm and cohesive. As time passes, the vanilla and patchouli remain present while the iris settles into the background, contributing to an overall sense of warmth that lingers throughout the wearing period.
Cultural impact
The sweet oriental category often leans into complexity and heavy projection. This fragrance takes a different approach, offering warmth and sophistication without the fanfare associated with larger oriental compositions. The vanilla-orris combination gives it an elegance that stands apart from typical designer fare. It's the kind of fragrance for those who appreciate oriental character but want something refined and approachable rather than bold and assertive.
