Why it exists.
The beginning
L'Automne De Hanoi arrived in 2015, composed by perfumer Huỳnh Hải Yến. The fragrance draws its name from the Vietnamese capital in autumn, evoking a season of particular quiet and shifting air. Yến built the scent around a blend of magnolia blossom, cinnamon, sandalwood, agarwood, frankincense, bergamot, oakmoss, and musk, each note chosen to suggest a specific sensory register rather than a literal scene. Magnolia opens with a soft, white floral character that never turns indolic. Cinnamon threads through the composition with a dry warmth that recalls wood more than spice. Bergamot lifts the top notes, bright but restrained. The woods and resins arrive beneath, giving the fragrance a grounded, contemplative weight. There is no projection-heavy opening designed to fill a room.
The Vietnamese framing of this composition is felt through the note interactions rather than any overt cultural statement. Huỳnh Hải Yến pairs agarwood and frankincense with cinnamon and sandalwood, allowing each material to soften the others. The cinnamon brings warmth without veering into gourmand territory. The sandalwood reads smooth and rounded, lacking the sharp, pencil-like edge that harsher sandalwood expressions can carry.
The evolution
Magnolia and bergamot open the composition in a clean, bright wash. The floral is soft and creamy, almost white in its rendering, and the citrus adds a light lift without becoming sharp or synthetic-feeling. This opening phase feels airy and approachable, the lightest the scent will be. As the composition settles, cinnamon enters with a dry, woody warmth. Not the heat of a spiced dessert, but something closer to sun-warmed timber or the slow heat of resin. Sandalwood appears beneath it, thickening the texture and giving the heart phase its grounding center. The florals recede gradually, never disappearing entirely but yielding space to the warmer, denser materials. Eventually, oakmoss and oud rise to the surface, joined by frankincense. The base that emerges is dense and green-woody, with a slightly resinous dryness from the frankincense.
