The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Amphorae collection translates ancient aromatic tradition into modern attar. Each bottle mirrors the vessels that once held precious oils, the original luxury containers. Xerjoff's 2022 release draws from this heritage, presenting amber as the star rather than the support act. Amphorae 17 is an amber oil in an amphora, designed for those who appreciate what perfume was before it became perfume.
Amber takes center stage here, not as a base note or a whisper, but as the defining material. The composition uses davana's orange-citrus quality to cut the sweetness before it overwhelms. Violet leaf adds a freshness that keeps the amber honest. Myrrh, incense, and benzoin deepen the heart into something resinous and warm. The base is pure comfort: sandalwood, vanilla, musk, and tonka that lingers close to the skin for hours.
The evolution
The opening announces amber immediately, honeyed, warm, with davana's citrus brightness cutting through. Violet leaf arrives a moment later, green and fresh against the sweetness. This phase reads clean despite the richness. The transition begins around the first hour: myrrh and incense arrive, shifting the composition toward smoke and resin. The davana citrus fades but doesn't disappear entirely. Benzoin adds a vanilla-like creaminess to the heart. The drydown settles slowly into sandalwood's warmth. Musk wraps around the vanilla and tonka without heaviness. The smoke from myrrh lingers as a ghost in the background, not dominant, but present. After 8-10 hours, what remains is amber, sandalwood, and a trace of vanilla. Close to the skin. Refined. A fragrance that improves as it fades. The attar format means a little goes far, two drops max, applied to pulse points.
Cultural impact
Amphorae 17 has earned its place among amber enthusiasts who want intensity without sweetness crossing into cloying territory. The attar oil format suits collectors who appreciate what perfume was before mass production. Xerjoff's Italian luxury positioning keeps it in rarefied company.
