The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Figue + Neroli arrived in 2021 from Luca Maffei. It joined Womo's growing catalogue at a moment when the house was exploring brighter, more sunlit territory, a shift from earlier launches that leaned heavier and more elemental. The pairing reads simple on paper: fig leaf and neroli, two materials that share a green-edged brightness. Maffei's task was to let those two voices hold the center without one swallowing the other. What separates this composition from a straightforward fig or neroli solo is how the two materials are coaxed into the same register, each one carrying enough weight to stand on its own while lending something distinctive to the other.
Fig leaf and neroli aren't an obvious match. The leaf carries that cool, slightly bitter, sap-green sharpness, the smell of a garden in midsummer with leaves still wet from watering. Neroli sits on the other side, orange blossom distilled to its most refined and transparent expression. What Maffei does is build connective tissue between them. The bitter orange in the opening and the lavender in the heart share a certain aromatic clarity, and they pull the two central notes toward the same temperature.
The evolution
The first spray is a bright crack of bergamot and bitter orange, almost tart, like biting into the rind. Within minutes the fig leaf takes over, not the sweet fruit but the cool, sappy underside of the leaf itself, with neroli opening up beside it like sun through foliage. The heart softens around 20 minutes in as jasmine absolute and lavender round the edges, giving the green something floral and almost powdery to lean against. By the two-hour mark the composition has gone quieter, warmer. Cedarwood, vetiver, and musk settle into a close, dry base that smells like warm bark and clean skin. The scent wears with an intimate presence that stays close rather than projecting outward. On a scarf or jacket the next morning, it's mostly the cedar and a faint sweetness that lingers, the kind of soft trail that invites another inhale without demanding attention.
Cultural impact
Figue + Neroli occupies a particular place within Womo's growing catalogue, a composition built around green and floral brightness rather than the heavier, smokier territory some of the house's other launches explore. It signals a willingness to work with lighter materials and to let them carry an entire structure without burying them under denser accords. The fragrance appeals to a certain kind of wearer, someone drawn to compositions that ask for patience and reward close attention.
