The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Black Amber arrived in 2014 as part of Womo's Black Collection, the house's study of noir as concept rather than aesthetic. The composition begins with black cherry, which serves as the structural foundation rather than a fleeting top note. Around that dark fruit, the perfumer built with unexpected bitter and herbal materials, artemisia, buchu, davana, creating an aromatic complexity that deepens the cherry rather than competing with it. The artemisia adds a green, slightly medicinal quality that keeps the sweetness in check. The buchu contributes a citrus-like sharpness that cuts through the richness, adding brightness to the composition. The davana brings an aromatic, slightly wine-like character that bridges the fruity and herbal elements.
The combination of bitter almond and davana in the heart is the structural surprise here. Davana brings an aromatic, slightly wine-like quality that is not typically paired with almond. The davana adds an aromatic complexity that brings unexpected dimension to the nuttiness of the almond. The cocoa note functions differently than expected: rather than a gourmand chocolate, it reads as a dark, roasted backbone that deepens the composition without adding sweetness.
The evolution
The opening announces itself with conviction. Black cherry arrives concentrated and lacquered, almost bitter in its sweetness. Artemisia follows quickly, adding a green, almost medicinal sharpness that immediately distinguishes this from standard cherry fragrances. The buchu contributes a bergamot-like citrus quality that cuts the sweetness further, making the opening feel more layered and complex. By the mid-wear, the cherry has not disappeared but has evolved into something more integrated. Davana takes the lead, bringing its aromatic, slightly fermented character alongside bitter almond, which emerges as the heart's primary warmth, nutty, slightly bitter, distinctly not sweet. Cocoa adds a dark, roasted undercurrent that feels more like a second base than a heart note, deepening the composition without overpowering.
Cultural impact
Black Amber is a cherry-forward oriental with real herbal complexity and a tobacco drydown. The fragrance stands apart from typical cherry interpretations by integrating bitter and aromatic materials throughout its development. What distinguishes this scent is the way the cherry interacts with artemisia, buchu, and davana rather than standing alone as a simple fruity note. The tobacco and vanilla base creates a rich foundation that supports the herbal heart, while the cocoa contributes depth without sweetness.
