The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Vive Maria is a German fashion house known for romantic femininity and vintage sensibility. When the brand entered perfumery in November 2007, it released two debut scents: Almost Innocent and Mis(s) Behave. The pairing placed the two fragrances in direct conversation with each other. Mis(s) Behave explored what happens after innocence gives way to something more complex, more layered, more willing to embrace contradiction. The bottle design featured Christian motifs, adding another register of meaning, another layer of what lies beneath the surface. The fragrance combined incense with tonka bean and cinnamon in its base notes, creating an unexpected warmth beneath the surface of its initially bright presentation.
The note structure makes this clear. Mandarin, juniper, and nutmeg open the composition with an assertive presence. But the heart brings sweetness: fig and peach blossom. Rose adds complexity rather than simple florality. Then the base shifts again: incense, tonka bean, and cinnamon introduce warmth and an almost resinous depth that lingers. The combination of warm spice, fruit, and resin creates a fragrance that resists easy categorization. Neither purely sweet nor purely spicy. Neither innocent nor aggressive.
The evolution
The opening arrives with mandarin and juniper bright and clean, nutmeg threading warmth through the citrus. Within minutes, the sweetness starts pushing through. Fig emerges with the plum in the heart, the fruit lending depth to the otherwise lush composition. Rose appears but doesn't dominate. It complicates rather than softens. The base is where this fragrance reveals its full character. Tonka bean and cinnamon leaf blend into something warm and slightly powdery, while incense adds a smoky, resinous depth that feels unexpected given the bright opening. The sillage moderates as it settles, becoming intimate rather than announced. As hours pass, the sweetness fades into something more complex, lingering close to the skin. The fragrance evolves throughout the day, each stage offering something different.
Cultural impact
Mis(s) Behave was released alongside Almost Innocent as part of Vive Maria's debut into perfumery in 2007. The use of Christian motifs on the bottles and the thematic exploration of duality in the naming suggested something more conceptual than typical fragrance releases. Both debut scents have since been discontinued. What remains is the fragrance itself: an interesting composition that rewards attention, combining sweetness and spice with unexpected resinous depth to create something that still stands apart from conventional offerings.
