The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
En Lace arrived in 2019, a composition built for UERMI, the Made in Italy house that approaches each release with a sense of occasion. The scent reads like a floral caught mid-conversation with something warmer, spice threading through petals, petals giving way to wood at the base, so the whole thing never settles into one register. It's a fragrance that dresses up without crossing into formal territory, the kind you reach for when the evening calls for something considered but not stiff. Picture a dinner reservation, a gallery opening, a first meeting that matters more than the room around it. The clove note keeps its shape from the first spray to the final drydown, holding the composition together while the florals bloom and recede.
What makes this composition interesting is the tension between the clove and the gardenia. Clove in the opening is unusual in a floral like this; it adds a dry, almost medicinal heat that cuts the sweetness before it can settle. Carissa sits in the heart alongside jasmine and gardenia, a lesser-known white floral that lifts the bouquet with a greenish, almost tropical brightness. Most florals go soft in the base. This one grounds itself in cedarwood and vetiver, which keeps the whole thing from floating away. It is a floral built on structure, not sentiment.
The evolution
The first ten minutes are sharp. Mandarin gives a clean sweetness, and clove comes right behind it, dry and warm and a little biting, the way clove smells on skin before it fully blooms. The gardenia doesn't rush. It waits, then arrives somewhere around the twenty-minute mark, creamy and a little waxy, pushing the clove to the edges. Jasmine threads through it, indolic and alive, and the carissa brightens things up, almost like the smell of a stem freshly broken. By the second hour, the florals start to blur and the base pushes forward. Cedarwood arrives dry and clean, almost pencil-shaving sharp, and the vetiver underneath stays cool and earthy. The drydown is where this one earns its keep. What remains four to six hours in is mostly vetiver and the ghost of gardenia, close to the skin, warm without sweetness. It doesn't project much by then. It just stays.
Cultural impact
En Lace sits quietly in a line that prizes versatility over spectacle. This is a composition that keeps its clove thread intact from first spray to final drydown, never dissolving entirely into sweetness. The spiced floral character gives it a distinct presence, appealing to anyone who wants a gardenia-adjacent scent but with more backbone and warmth underneath. On skin, the floral heart and the clove-spice accord share the stage, trading leads throughout the wear. Early on, the spice has a brighter edge that catches attention, then settles into a deeper, woodier tone as hours pass.
