The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Hamid Merati-Kashani was given a deceptively simple brief: translate courage into scent for Tory Burch's 2024 Essence of Dreams collection. The New York brand, founded in 2004 and known for its modern take on American sportswear, wanted something that could make leather appeal to people who typically shy away from it. The perfumer's challenge was to strip leather of its associations with heaviness and intensity, replacing raw power with something more considered. Working with ginger and violet leaf in the opening, Merati-Kashani established a fresh, almost sparkling entry point that subverts expectations before the leather concept has even arrived.
The note philosophy behind Enduring Leather rests on a single question: what if leather were an accessory rather than a statement? By grounding the drydown in iris, Merati-Kashani ensures that the leather impression arrives through elegance rather than force. The woodleather functions as a textural bridge between the floral heart and the skin, while violet leaf in the opening signals early that this will not be a typical leather fragrance. Orange blossom provides a crucial counterweight to the cypress, ensuring the heart never reads as too masculine or austere. The pairing rationale is clear: each note either softens or elevates the leather concept, never allowing it to dominate.
The evolution
The fragrance moves through distinct emotional registers. In the opening, ginger delivers an immediate, almost spicy brightness that could read as aggressive on its own, but violet leaf intervenes with its cool, green restraint, creating tension that feels intentional. This is the courage concept made aromatic: sharp but controlled. The heart phase introduces cypress, which brings a dry, coniferous quality that echoes the leather ambition without stating it directly, while orange blossom adds a creamy floral dimension that humanizes the composition. This is the moment where the wearer understands that leather here is not a force to be reckoned with but a texture to be appreciated. The drydown reveals the full philosophy: iris contributes its powdery, aristocratic elegance while woodleather delivers the actual leather sensation in its most refined form, suede rather than saddle, suggestion rather than statement. The evolution tells a story of leather becoming approachable without losing its essential character.
Cultural impact
Enduring Leather reflects a growing global fascination with heritage materials blended with exotic spice, echoing Nigeria’s rising influence in luxury markets and the broader resurgence of leather as a symbol of empowerment in contemporary fashion. By pairing Nigerian ginger with violet leaf, the fragrance bridges African botanical richness and Western sartorial tradition, resonating with consumers seeking authentic cross‑cultural narratives and reinforcing the brand’s commitment to inclusive storytelling in the perfume industry.
