The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Infinite Oak is one of five scents in the Essence of Dreams collection, Tory Burch's 2024 olfactory statement. The brief was simple: find wisdom in wood. Not the obvious cedar path, but something rarer. Oakmoss as a heart note is unusual in modern perfumery; it's been systematically avoided since IFRA restrictions tightened in the early 2000s. Using it as a centerpiece is a quiet act of defiance. The perfumer understood the assignment, neroli and mandarin open the composition with genuine warmth, then step aside for the oakmoss to do its work.
What makes this structure interesting is the myrrh. Resinous, slightly bitter, it bridges the gap between the bright opening and the woody base without ever letting the fragrance become a single note. Vetiver and sandalwood arrive late and stay longest, the drydown isn't a fade, it's a commitment. Each material has a specific origin: Madagascan mandarin, Australian sandalwood, Madagascan vetiver. The geography reads like a travelogue of the southern hemisphere's best wood and citrus.
The evolution
The opening is brief and beautiful. Neroli's sharp, floral bitterness meets mandarin's fleeting sweetness, maybe thirty minutes before the balance shifts. The heart arrives around twenty minutes in. Oakmoss and myrrh settle in together, resinous, slightly bitter, but not heavy. They ground the brightness without killing it. What started as a sunny opening has turned contemplative. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Sandalwood and vetiver take over completely, and they don't let go. On skin, expect 5-7 hours of a mineral-woodsy base that stays close but persistent. On fabric, it outlasts a full day, sometimes two. The vetiver especially has that quiet staying power. Not loud. Just there when you check back.
Cultural impact
The Essence of Dreams collection marks a deliberate expansion of the Tory Burch fragrance portfolio, positioning the brand alongside niche houses with its sourcing ambitions. Infinite Oak stands out for using oakmoss as a centerpiece, a material many brands have quietly abandoned. The 2024 launch window placed it alongside a trio of contemporaries: Daring Rose, Enduring Leather, and Luminous Musk.
