The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2021, perfumer David Huang was tasked with translating something that resists translation: the osmanthus flower. Not its scent profile or its chemical footprint, but the thing it actually means to the millions of people who grew up beneath its canopy every October. To Summer has built its entire brand around this challenge, creating fragrances that attempt to capture emotional and cultural resonance rather than simply replicating botanical accuracy. Huang worked with Peach and Green Notes in the opening to establish a brightness that osmanthus alone lacks, giving the fragrance an entry point that feels immediate and accessible.
To Summer's note philosophy treats osmanthus not as a single ingredient to be reproduced but as a feeling to be approximated through complementary materials. The Peach note serves as a fruity anchor that bridges the gap between osmanthus and the Western perfumery vocabulary most wearers will recognize. Green Notes provide the naturalism that grounds the composition, while Bitter Orange adds a sharpness that keeps the opening from becoming saccharine. In the heart, Violet and Jasmine do the work of supporting osmanthus without overwhelming it, creating a floral bed rather than a floral storm.
The evolution
The fragrance begins with Peach and Green Notes creating a dewy, early-morning quality that feels almost botanical. Bitter Orange arrives as a brief citrus accent, similar to the way osmanthus blossoms carry a faint citrus undertone in nature. As the top notes fade, Violet and Jasmine emerge to frame the Osmanthus, their powdery character providing contrast to the apricot-like sweetness of the central note. Rose adds a velvety quality that prevents the heart from reading as purely fruity. The drydown then shifts toward Amber and White Musk, a combination that mirrors the way osmanthus blossoms eventually settle into warm, wood-adjacent tones as the evening cools. The progression moves from bright to intimate, from garden to memory.
Cultural impact
Among niche fragrance enthusiasts, 颐和金桂 has drawn particular attention for its approach to osmanthus, a note that carries deep resonance in Chinese culture. Wearers who grew up with osmanthus trees often describe finding something specific in this composition, a recognition that goes beyond a generalized floral interpretation. Reviews frequently mention how the fragrance captures the real smell of osmanthus bloom rather than an approximation, praised for its authenticity and restraint.
