Why it exists.
The beginning
闲 means leisure. Not the poolside kind. The Chinese character carries the weight of spare time, of unhurried afternoons, of the pause between obligations. To Summer built their Literature Collection around Shanghai, and Leisure lives inside it as a portrait of stillness within a city that rarely stops. Frank Voelkl composed this in 2023, and the perfumer's hand shapes every layer of what follows. Green leaves and angelica root at the opening, jasmine and orchid at the heart, bamboo and sandalwood beneath. The architecture is deliberate: a green-bright top that catches light, a floral middle that softens without sweetening, and a base that pulls everything toward something quieter.
What separates 闲 from a hundred other green florals is the bamboo. Paired with sandalwood, it grounds the composition without weighing it down, and the pairing gives the base a particular kind of clarity: woody but airy, dense but never heavy. The bamboo reads as a cool, almost papery presence, and the sandalwood underneath smooths the edges without adding sweetness. Together they create a foundation that feels stable but translucent. Violet leaf does the heavy lifting early.
The evolution
The first 30 minutes are all green. Violet leaf and angelica root dominate, sharp and cool, like the smell of stems broken between fingers. There's a mineral edge to it, almost cucumber-like in its clarity, and it sits close to the skin rather than projecting outward. This is a fragrance that rewards patience over impatience. Around the 90-minute mark, the jasmine arrives. Not indolic, not heady. It's a clean, almost watery jasmine, cushioned by orchid and the powdery sweetness of lily of the valley. The composition breathes here, opens up just enough to let the florals register without ever tipping into bouquet territory. Cedarwood anchors the transition, woody but pale, like raw wood rather than pencil shavings. The drydown is where Leisure earns its name.

The fragrance treats Shanghai not as a backdrop but as a subject, capturing something about its quieter hours, its pauses between obligations, its shaded courtyards and slow afternoons.
