The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
To Summer, the Chinese house founded in 2018, crafts scents that echo Eastern art and seasonal moments, pairing minimalist bottles with restrained, narrative‑driven compositions. For its 2025 Slow Summer collection, the brand commissioned veteran perfumer Frank Voelkl to capture a rose that has learned to thrive among thorns. Named Wounded Rose, the limited edition promises a fragrance that refuses easy beauty, using herbs, resin and wood to tell a story of survival rather than sweetness.
The core botanical and emotional concept is rose expressed through herbs, resin and wood rather than sweetness or fruit. Fennel seed and lavender were chosen for the opening to create an aromatic, slightly bitter foundation that deliberately avoids conventional freshness. Geranium and palmarosa channel the same herbal energy into the heart, ensuring the rose never dominates through sheer sweetness. The drydown relies on patchouli and myrrh, two ingredients known for their dark, resinous character, to ground the entire structure in earth rather than air. Each note family was selected to reinforce the narrative of beauty found in struggle, which is exactly what the name Wounded Rose promises.
The evolution
The opening launches with pink pepper and fennel seed alongside lavender, creating an aromatic, spice‑bright introduction that sets an unexpected tone. The herbal quality of fennel and lavender establishes a botanical foundation, giving the initial phase a green, slightly bitter sharpness that differs from conventional rose openings. As the heart develops, geranium and palmarosa amplify the green, slightly tart floralcy, while labdanum wraps the rose in warm amber resin. The rose itself blooms in this phase, tempered by the surrounding botanicals rather than presented as a straightforward floral. The drydown arrives with myrrh and patchouli creating a dark, balsamic foundation that anchors the composition. Vetiver adds earthy, slightly smoky depth while musk keeps the finish warm and Intimate.
Cultural impact
Wounded Rose 刺 captures a moment of contemporary Chinese summer culture, where traditional symbolism of the rose intertwines with modern minimalist aesthetics. The use of fennel seed and pink pepper reflects a growing interest in spice‑forward accords among younger consumers, while the lavender nods to classic perfumery. Launched in 2025, the scent arrived as part of To Summer’s Slow Summer series, encouraging wearers to pause and appreciate fleeting seasonal moments. Its moderate sillage suits both Intimate gatherings and bustling city streets, mirroring the balance between personal expression and communal experience that defines urban Chinese youth culture.
