The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
French Fig is a composition from The Saltworks Company's catalogue, created by perfumer Kenneth Orbeck. The fragrance offers a nature-inspired green-fruital take on the fig, built around the tension between garden freshness and something more lush. Fig leaf and grass establish an opening that feels green, leafy, and close to the ground, while tarragon brings a herbal edge with a slight anise-like lift. The heart moves toward apricot and coconut milk, adding warmth and creaminess where a more conventional green fragrance might remain entirely vegetal. Red pepper threads through the middle, providing a controlled warmth that keeps the composition from becoming overly soft.
The combination of coconut milk and green fig gives French Fig an unusual shape. Coconut contributes a creamy, lactonic sweetness, but here it sits within a leafy, herbal frame rather than standing on its own. Fig leaf, tarragon, and grass keep the composition connected to greenery, while apricot adds a soft fruitiness that bridges the green opening and the creamy middle. Red pepper acts as a hinge between these contrasting elements.
The evolution
The opening is the greenest expression of French Fig, with fig leaf and grass appearing sharp and herbal. Tarragon adds a faint anise edge, giving the greenery a more articulate, slightly lifted character. Apricot then arrives as a warm, fleshy fruit note, softening the sharper green quality. Coconut milk follows, bringing a creamy texture that makes the composition feel fuller and more grounded. Red pepper appears through the middle as a low warmth, keeping the fruit and coconut from becoming overly sweet. As the fragrance develops, the base becomes more present: amber adds warmth, balsam contributes a faint medicinal and resinous sweetness, and cedar cuts through with a clean, dry woody quality. The final impression is woody, warm, and close to the skin, with amber, balsam, and cedar forming the most enduring structure.
Cultural impact
French Fig takes a distinctive approach to the fig fragrance, pairing its green leafy character with apricot, coconut milk, and red pepper. Instead of relying only on the fruit's familiar sweetness, the composition places fig leaf and grass at the center, then develops through creamy and warmly textured notes. The result is a fragrance that can be explored from several directions: green and herbal at the opening, fruity and creamy through the heart, and warm, resinous, and woody at the base. Its appeal lies in the way these contrasting elements change the fig profile into something more unusual and textured.
