The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Woods of Timber 14 arrived in 2025 as part of The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression collection, a line built around reconstructing recognizable scent architectures from houses that charge several times the price. The reference here is Amouage's Opus XVI, a woody composition known for its frankincense depth and resinous backbone. The Dua Brand approached it with their characteristic directness and attention to material detail. Reconstruct the architecture, keep the vibe, strip the gatekeeping is not an explicit motto, but the work reflects that impulse in practice. This particular release leans into the aromatic and balsamic side of the original, stacking frankincense and Palo Santo against a woody base of sandalwood, patchouli, and cedar, with cocoa and lavender threading through the heart.
What makes this composition distinctive is the layering of aromatic woods against gourmand-leaning warmth. Palo Santo and Omani green frankincense are not common pairing partners for cocoa, yet here they coexist in a way that reads smoky and resinous rather than sweet. Pink pepper and cardamom in the opening add a dry, almost savory heat, while juniper and cypress keep the top green and crisp. It is a structure that lands in an aromatic-woody register that feels meditative rather than heavy.
The evolution
The opening lands sharp and aromatic. Pink pepper and cardamom arrive with a clean, almost peppery heat, while juniper and cypress push the scent toward something bracing and green, like stepping into a cold forest at dawn. That crispness holds for the first stretch of wear, then the heart begins to emerge, and the composition shifts considerably. Frankincense arrives with a church-like solemnity, dense and resinous, while Palo Santo adds a softer, almost lemony woodsmoke. Fir balsam cuts the incense with green pine, and Provençal lavender weaves through, adding a clean herbal facet. The combination reads less like a traditional incense composition and more like a walk through a damp woodland where someone has been burning sage. As the hours pass, the base takes over completely.
Cultural impact
Woods of Timber 14 draws on Amouage's Opus XVI, a woody composition known for its frankincense depth and meditative structure, and early wearers note the recreation captures the incense-woody register convincingly. The Dua Brand's approach here is consistent with its broader catalog: transparent ingredient lists, vegan formulations, and compositions aimed at fragrance enthusiasts who already know what they like. It is a scent for someone who already knows what they want and does not need to be sold on the concept.
