The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahsam Raza composed Tobacco Nights for The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, and the brief seems clear from the formula: take the amber-tobacco archetype and reconstruct it through the house's approachable lens. Launched in 2025, it draws from a familiar vocabulary of resin, tobacco flower, and tonka, the kind of combination that reads as intimate, weighted, and slightly formal. Raza builds the composition around contrast: cumin's savory heat meets clementine's clean citrus snap in the opening, a pairing that keeps the fragrance from sliding into pure sweetness. The opening act is short but confident, a flicker of bright zest over warm, almost kitchen-like spice that gives the scent its initial pull.
What makes the structure interesting is the choice to lead with cumin and coriander rather than a smoother spice like cardamom or nutmeg. Cumin has a savory, almost bodily quality that grounds the tobacco rather than letting it float. Labdanum and frankincense do the heavy lifting in the heart, providing the sticky warmth that amber-tobacco compositions rely on, while tonka bean softens the transition. Cedarwood and patchouli in the base keep the drydown grounded and earthy, preventing the blend from becoming overly sweet or gourmand.
The evolution
The opening is deceptive. Cumin and coriander arrive almost savory, a dry warmth that reads closer to kitchen spice than perfume, with clementine offering a quick bright flick before it vanishes into the warmer notes beneath. Soon after, frankincense starts to surface, carrying a church-incense quality that mixes with labdanum's sticky amber character. Tobacco flower emerges quietly here, less a smoky note and more of a dried-leaf impression, a sun-cured herbal texture that sits comfortably against the resin. The blend plateaus in the heart, tonka rounds everything off, softening the resinous edges into something more approachable and lending a gentle sweetness to the structure. The composition then shifts into its drydown phase: cedarwood provides a clean woody backbone while patchouli adds earth and depth, grounding the warmer elements with something drier and more rooted.
Cultural impact
Tobacco Nights sits in The Dua Brand's Inspired Expression line, a collection dedicated to reinterpreting classic perfume structures for contemporary audiences. The composition draws from the amber-tobacco tradition, working with cumin, resin, tobacco flower, and tonka as its central pillars. It's a scent that rewards close wearing, offering a warm, spiced character that feels both familiar and freshly composed. The cumin in the opening is particularly distinctive, lending a savory, almost edible quality that sets the fragrance apart from sweeter members of the same family.
