The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Two of modern perfumery's sharpest hands sat down to answer a question: what does willpower smell like? Not grit, not aggression. The answer, for Nathalie Lorson and Alberto Morillas, wasn't a concept at all. It was a texture. The dry, mineral snap of Calabrian bergamot, the herbal calm of lavender and sage, and the slow burn of Bourbon vanilla absolute meeting leather and Indonesian patchouli. I Will is Giorgio Armani's 2026 men's release, and the name carries weight all on its own. What you get in the bottle is a composition built on contrasts that somehow hold: citrus brightness against deep resinous warmth, aromatic herbs cushioned by something rich and almost edible underneath.
What's interesting here is the restraint. The brief could have screamed. Woody vanilla fragrances tend to overdo one half of that equation, drowning in sweetness or burying it under smoke. Lorson and Morillas kept the vanilla absolute from Madagascar as a base anchor, giving it room to breathe without letting it dominate the composition. The leather, trademarked as Woodleather®, does what leather does best in perfumery: it tightens everything. Indonesian patchouli adds weight without muddiness, the dry-earth side rather than the damp-mushroom side.
The evolution
The opening is deceptive. Calabrian bergamot leads with that crisp, almost saline brightness, and there's a moment where the fragrance could read as just another clean citrus aromatic. It doesn't stay there. As the top notes settle, the lavender and sage muscle in, and the violet leaf adds a cool, green-cucumber undertone that reads almost mineral, almost metallic. This is where the composition starts to feel layered rather than linear. The heart phase reveals the herbal pairing in full, with sage contributing a dry, slightly camphorous edge and lavender smoothing everything into something more familiar and approachable. The violet leaf weaves between them with a watery freshness that keeps the whole phase from getting too heavy.
Cultural impact
I Will entered the crowded woody-vanilla space in 2026 with British actor Jonathan Bailey fronting its campaign, a choice that puts a recognizable face in front of a fragrance aimed squarely at people who like their scents composed and intentional. The campaign imagery leans polished rather than aggressive, which matches the composition underneath. In conversation with other modern vanilla-leather releases, I Will holds its own through a drier, more mineral approach that doesn't collapse into the syrupy territory some of its competitors occupy. It sits closer to skin than to the air around you, which changes how it gets noticed.
