The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Rio Tobac Voyage is a 2026 release from The Dua Brand, composed by Mahsam Raza. It takes its direction from Ormonde Jayne's Montabaco Rio, one of the more recognizable references in the tropical-tobacco conversation. The composition opens with a bright burst of pineapple and rhubarb, sweetened by caramel and sharpened at the edges by bergamot and cardamom. At the heart, a generous tobacco note meets mango and ambroxan for a clean, sunlit warmth that keeps the blend from veering too gourmand or too austere. The base settles into amber and suede, with vanilla and moss lending a soft, textured finish. The whole thing reads tropical without ever tipping into sunscreen territory, and the tobacco stays present enough to justify the name on the bottle.
The interesting move here is the fruit-tobacco pivot. This one leads with pineapple and rhubarb, then folds in tobacco at the heart, layered alongside mango and ambroxan for a clean, almost mineral glow. The result feels lively on the skin, with the fruit doing the bright, attention-grabbing work upfront and the tobacco waiting in the middle to deliver the warmer, more grounded character the genre is known for. The amber-suede base carries weight underneath, and the vanilla wraps around the lower notes like a slow exhale.
The evolution
The opening is loud and unmistakable. Pineapple and rhubarb announce themselves with a sugary-tart bite, while bergamot and cardamom keep it from smelling like a smoothie. Caramel threads through the top, soft and buttery, the way sugar caramelizes on a hot pan. It doesn't sit still. It moves. The fruit recedes and the middle takes over as the composition develops. Mango adds a lush, almost ripe sweetness that blends into the tobacco rather than competing with it. The ambroxan gives everything a clean, slightly mineral glow, like sun on linen. Cashmere wood and moss settle in below, providing texture. This is the warmest, most textured phase, and it's where the fragrance earns its tobacco name. From there, the suede and amber take command. The vanilla wraps around the tobacco like a slow exhale. What started tropical ends woody and intimate.
Cultural impact
The Dua Brand released Rio Tobac Voyage in 2026, and the composition enters a catalog that already shows a clear fondness for tobacco as a creative material. As part of the brand's Inspired Expression collection, the fragrance follows a recognizable template: bright tropical fruits at the top, a tobacco-led heart, and a warm, gourmand base built around amber, suede, and vanilla. The choice of pineapple, rhubarb, and caramel at the opening puts a modern, fruit-forward spin on the tobacco concept, giving it a brightness that sets it apart from the heavier, leather-anchored tobacco compositions that tend to dominate the category.
