The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Mahsam Raza built Error 422 in 2023 as part of The Dua Brand's Dua Designer Line. The fragrance carries an opulent, gold-plated energy that feels like a wink to high-roller perfumery, the kind of bottle you associate with velvet ropes and stacked chips on a casino felt. Raza treated the composition as its own statement rather than a copy of anything else on the market. The opening hits with that shiny, celebratory burst that makes you sit up straighter, bright citrus and a flash of something almost metallic, before the heart rolls in warmer and more grounded. There's a confident swagger in the way the notes stack on top of each other, each one catching the light a little differently as the hours pass.
The note structure is deliberate in its contrasts, and the way those contrasts unfold is half the fun. Bergamot and tangerine up top deliver citrus brightness, almost effervescent on first spray, but cardamom threads through them like a warning shot, spicy and slightly smoky, making the opening read bold rather than safe. The heart layers lavender's classic aromatic cleanliness against sage's herbal depth and violet leaf's green bitterness, creating a crisp core that feels both familiar and slightly off-kilter, the way a perfectly tailored suit looks with one unexpected accessory.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are all cardamom and tangerine doing their bright, slightly dangerous dance on top. Bergamot adds a clean edge, almost cologne-like, but the spice keeps it grounded. By the 30-minute mark, the lavender and sage take over, pulling the composition into that crisp aromatic space where it smells expensive without trying too hard. Violet leaf adds a green, almost bitter counterpoint that keeps the heart from going soft. Two hours in, benzoin arrives with its warm, almost honeyed sweetness, settling over the cedarwood and patchouli like a slow sunset. The drydown sticks close to skin for another 3-4 hours, that earthy patchouli-cedar combo with benzoin's faint vanilla glow underneath. By the next morning, what's left is mostly the woody backbone, warm and slightly sweet, clinging to fabric and skin alike.
Cultural impact
Error 422 entered The Dua Brand's catalog in 2023 as part of the Dua Designer Line, and it slotted into a roster that had already established the house as a restless experimenter across genres. The fragrance reads as a warm spicy woody composition, and the note progression makes that classification feel earned rather than aspirational. Bergamot and tangerine open with that bright citrus hit, sharp and almost candied before the cardamom cuts in with its smoky, peppery insistence.
