The beginning
Bowhanti arrived in 2016 as part of The Body Shop's Elixirs of Nature collection. It was built around the Wacapou tree, a material note that anchors the composition with a dense, smoky character. At the top, juniper, carrot seed and galbanum create a sharp, green-edged opening that feels almost coniferous, with the carrot seed lending a dry, rooty undertone. The heart introduces cinnamon and freesia, where the cinnamon warms the composition without turning gourmand, and the freesia adds a quiet, slightly powdery counterpoint that keeps the middle phase from going heavy. The base is where Bowhanti settles into its real character: frankincense, patchouli and Peru balsam fold together into a resinous, incense-laden foundation.
What's unusual here is the absence of the usual sweet anchors. Bowhanti leans dry, resinous, almost austere, built around the interplay between galbanum's bitter green bite and frankincense's cool smoke. Peru balsam adds a faintly vanillic warmth, but it never tips into gourmand territory. The cinnamon in the heart is structural, not decorative, bridging the green-sharp opening and the incense-heavy base. Wearers have drawn direct parallels to Féminité du Bois, and the comparison holds: both compositions lean into the material presence of wood rather than using it as a backdrop.

The first 15 minutes are the loudest Bowhanti ever gets. Galbanum and juniper hit sharp and green, almost coniferous, with carrot seed adding a dry, rooty earthiness beneath. There's a brightness here that some wearers mistake for citrus, but it's more architectural than juicy. Then cinnamon arrives. It doesn't rush in so much as seep, warming the green sharpness without flattening it, while freesia adds a quiet, powdery counterpoint that keeps the heart from going too heavy. By the 90-minute mark, the base has fully taken over. Frankincense and patchouli fold into each other, with Peru balsam humming underneath, lending a faint sweetness that reads like wood that remembers being alive. Bowhanti sits in an unusual space. It belongs to a mass-market body-care brand, but it composes like something with more deliberate intentions. Wearers routinely compare it to Shiseido's Féminité du Bois, noting its woody-spicy-resinous architecture as closer to that kind of composition than to typical body-care fare. That crossover appeal has earned it a following among fragrance hobbyists who didn't expect to find something this layered on a Body Shop shelf.
