The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Christian Carbonnel created Exotic Leather for Testament London in 2021. The house, founded in 2018 by Bogdan Vlad, operates from Provence with small batches and deliberate pacing. Carbonnel, known as Chris Maurice, brought a vision rooted in French olfactory craft but inflected with London's urban directness. The brief for Exotic Leather was specific: build a leather that behaves differently.
Carbonnel chose pineapple and saffron to frame the leather from unexpected angles. Coconut bridges the gap between fruit and hide, adding body without weight. The vanilla and amber base ensures longevity while maintaining restraint. Each note serves the leather rather than competing with it, a philosophy that defines Testament London's approach to composition.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a collision of pineapple and saffron, tropical sweetness meeting warm spice. Mandarin and bergamot arrive as stabilizers, preventing the saffron from dominating while adding brightness. As the top notes recede, leather appears not as an assault but as presence, joined by coconut cream and jasmine. The drydown settles into musk, amber, and vanilla, the leather softened into something almost cuddly by comparison to traditional interpretations.
Cultural impact
Exotic Leather has found its audience among leather lovers who want something that doesn't follow the usual playbook. Community discussions praise its boldness, the pineapple-saffron opening, and its departure from more conventional leather references. For those exploring niche leather fragrances with unexpected tropical notes, it's worth the trip.
