The beginning
Ultima launched in 2014 as a celebration of adrenaline and the indomitable spirit of adventure, which sounds like marketing until you wear it and realize the citrus-marine top really does feel like the first ten seconds of a sprint. The opening hits with a burst of cool citrus and something that reads as sea air on cold skin, and it's got the kind of clean, ozonic snap that makes you stand a little taller the first time you catch it in the mirror. This composition wears like a man who's already in motion. The heart softens the marine edge with a touch of green herbal lift, something that smells like crushed mint leaves tossed into a glass of cold water.
What's worth noticing here is the layering of marine notes with bay leaf, a combination that doesn't get used nearly enough. The sea-water accord reads clean and synthetic in cheaper hands, but paired against the herbal warmth of bay leaf and the slight greenness of jasmine, it gains dimension. The base is where Swiss Arabian pulls from their Arabian toolkit: guaiac wood for that dry, smoky-woody warmth, oakmoss for depth and that unmistakable fougère shadow, patchouli for earth, and ambergris for that saline-skin warmth underneath everything. The evolution
The first thirty minutes are a cold splash. Grapefruit and mandarin cut through sharp, almost sharp enough to taste, and underneath that the marine accord pushes forward like wind off open water. It reads clean, almost clinical, like standing at the bow of something moving fast. Around the forty-minute mark, the jasmine arrives, but not the indolic, almost-rotten jasmine of a white floral. This is the brighter, more transparent version, Hedione-style, lending a clean radiance rather than density. The bay leaf slots in beside it with a herbal, almost eucalyptus-adjacent coolness that keeps the opening's briskness alive. The fragrance is still leaning fresh, but it's now herbal-fresh rather than salty-fresh. By the second hour, the base has started its slow takeover. Guaiac wood shows up first, that dry, slightly smoky quality like a match just blown out. Patchouli follows, but here it stays restrained, dusty and earthy rather than the hippie-soil version.
