The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Essence 35 arrived in 2018 as part of Xavier Dufourcq-Chappaz's Non Binary Essence debut, a fragrance line built on a deliberately tight premise: numbered compositions, no gendered descriptors, no seasonal logic. The number is the only label. Within that constraint, Essence 35 was framed by Dufourcq-Chappaz as a portrait of an urban moment. The official copy describes a stroll along a hot concrete sidewalk, the sound of a radio DJ mixing with the natural aroma of a burning afternoon, the warm scent of asphalt and motors, sweet and freshly spicy light. That image is the entire brief. A city at peak heat, rendered through fragrance rather than described around it.
The unusual move here is the Metal Rail Accord up top. In Essence 35, the metallic reading behaves less like decorative shimmer and more like a load-bearing element, carrying the saffron's warmth into something that smells less like spice and more like sun-heated steel. The Cade oil in the heart reinforces that asphaltic quality, a smoky cade character that bridges green leaves and iris with something tarry and burnt. It's a composition that treats the city itself as a raw material rather than a setting.
The evolution
The opening is loud. Metallic notes hit first, sharp and almost industrial, the saffron arriving right behind like a thread of heat woven through cold metal. One reviewer described it as aldehyde-adjacent, and that's fair. There's a gluey, resinous brightness at the edge of it that doesn't apologize. As the composition moves forward, the Cade oil and iris start pulling it somewhere greener and cooler. The green notes soften the metallic edge, and you get something that reads as wet pavement after the heat breaks. The patchouli in the base shows up earlier than expected, adding a bitter green counterweight to the iris's powder. Eventually the cashmere wood and oakmoss take over, and the fragrance settles into a soft, woody-musky close that smells like the fabric of a jacket left on a chair overnight. It stays intimate from there.
Cultural impact
Essence 35's metallic and Cade-driven profile gives it an urban, almost architectural character. The composition reads as deliberate, built around an industrial palette rather than the more common oud-and-amber architecture seen in other niche work. The Metal Rail Accord up top, the smoky cade in the heart, and the woody-musky drydown create a structure that feels considered from start to finish. It's a fragrance that asks for attention rather than offering instant comfort, rewarding the wearer who approaches it with patience.
