The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Named after the French phrase for summer hug, Câlin d'Été was conceived by Prin Lomros in 2024 as a fragrant tribute to François Ozon film Été 85. The perfume seeks to bottle the fleeting intimacy of a teenage romance on the Normandy coast, where sun-lit days give way to lingering evenings. Strangers Parfumerie approached the brief not with generic beach notes but with a structure that feels cinematic: the aldehydic sparkle of the opening recalls 1980s film stock, while the warm honey and iris of the heart capture youthful longing. The drydown, rich with tobacco, leather, and white chocolate, becomes the memory that stays with you long after the credits roll.
The note selection reflects a philosophy of contrast: aldehydes and citrus create an initial brightness that feels almost ironic against the deep, sensual drydown that follows. Prin Lomros chose solar notes and honey for the heart to capture summer warmth in its most concentrated form, then anchored the composition with tobacco, leather, and gaiac to give the fragrance substance and longevity. The white chocolate and vanilla in the base are not afterthoughts but deliberate choices to soften the smoke and leather into something that reads as Intimate rather than harsh.
The evolution
The fragrance opens with a crisp, almost metallic aldehydic shimmer that immediately distinguishes it from typical summer scents. Bergamot and orange provide a bright citrus foundation, but the aldehydes elevate this combination into something more luminous and vintage-inspired. Within minutes, the heart reveals its warmth: amyris adds a soft, ambery quality while honey brings a golden, sun-drenched sweetness that feels like afternoon light on bare skin. Iris rounds the heart with a powdery, slightly root-like elegance that prevents the honey from becoming too sweet. As the fragrance moves into its long drydown, the structure deepens considerably. Tobacco and leather introduce a smoky, textual quality, while white chocolate and vanilla create a creamy, edible warmth. Gaiac and patchouli provide woody, earthy grounding, and cypress adds a faint ever green lift. Ambergris ties everything tog ether with a salty, animalic finish that evolves on skin for hours, shifting from warm honey to smoky leather to a lingering, skin-close musk.
Cultural impact
Câlin d'Été arrives at a moment when French‑inspired summer scents are experiencing a resurgence, reflecting a cultural desire for nostalgic warmth blended with modern vibrancy. The name, meaning “summer hug,” taps into collective memories of carefree afternoons, while the aldehydic citrus top notes echo the post‑pandemic yearning for freshness. Its release in 2024 coincides with a broader trend of narrative‑driven perfumery, where stories of personal moments are encoded in scent.
