The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Astral Temple opens with amber, that warm, golden resin that has long served as a foundation in perfumery for its ability to capture light-like warmth in liquid form. Around this amber core, Solstice Scents built a composition that layers bright orange against the resinous base, letting citrus brightness and honeyed depth inform and enhance each other. Ginger and clove add spice to the blend, their aromatic heat lifting the sweetness of the orange while complementing the warmth of the amber beneath. Frankincense brings a smoky, incense-like quality that connects the sweeter elements to something more austere and contemplative.
What makes Astral Temple's note structure interesting is how the orange doesn't behave like typical citrus. Here it's paired with amber from the first breath, creating something closer to blood orange preserves than a zesty opener. The ginger adds clean heat without the sharp bite found in fresher compositions, and the clove acts as a bridge between the bright top and the earthy base, a spice that understands both warmth and shadow. The frankincense doesn't arrive loudly; it threads through the entire composition like smoke that never fully dissipates. It's present in the opening, dominant in the heart, and lingers in the drydown.
The evolution
The opening of Astral Temple presents bright blood orange alongside golden amber, a combination that feels immediate and assertive. Ginger and clove quickly make their presence known, their aromatic spice preventing the citrus and amber from becoming overly sweet. During this initial phase, the fragrance announces itself with confidence, the orange-amber-spice accord projecting with notable presence. As time passes, the blood orange takes on a rounder, sweeter quality while the amber deepens in character. Frankincense becomes more prominent, its resinous, smoky notes grounding the warmth that might otherwise become too saccharine. The heart of the composition centers on the interplay between amber and frankincense, with patchouli and vetiver gradually becoming more apparent from the base.
Cultural impact
Within the indie fragrance community, Astral Temple occupies a distinctive niche among amber-forward compositions. The warm amber here avoids the sweet vanilla character that often dominates this category, instead offering something more complex and resinous. The frankincense presence adds an element of austerity that balances the sweetness without overwhelming it. Wearers find a fragrance that feels present without being aggressive, occupying space in a room without demanding attention. The scent invites close examination and reveals new facets with repeated wearings, rewarding those who return to it multiple times.
