The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
It's a long story by Smell Frankly launched in 2025 as part of Collection 1, the debut lineup from a brand built on a simple irritation with the fragrance industry's price tags. Founded with a direct, unvarnished tone, Smell Frankly entered the conversation naming scents like Lie To Me and The Night Is Young, speaking plainly to wearers who felt shut out by usual luxury territory. This particular composition wears that same attitude. The name isn't cryptic abstraction, it's a phrase lifted straight from speech, the kind of sentence that arrives when explaining something messy and complicated. The brand built the scent around that feeling of something sweet that curdles into something earned, a citrus beginning that doesn't behave.
What's interesting here is the collision at the heart. Pineapple and jasmine rarely share space with patchouli this directly, and the pineapple-fruity sweetness against patchouli's earthy depth creates a tug that's more interesting than either note alone. Most fragrances lean either bright or grounded; this one refuses to choose. The base reinforces that refusal. Birch, oakmoss, ambergris, and musk form a foundation that reads smoky and somewhat leathery, with Ambroxan adding a clean, mineral edge.
The evolution
The first 20 minutes belong to the citrus. Bergamot and lemon arrive with green apple's tart snap and blackcurrant's dark fruit, sharp and bright enough to cut through morning haze. That opening reads almost cheerful, which is misleading. Around the 30-minute mark, the fruit and florals surface: jasmine lands with a soft, creamy indolic warmth, and pineapple brings its sugary, slightly metallic sweetness. Patchouli arrives underneath, earthy and damp, pulling the composition away from clean and toward something more lived-in. By hour two, the base takes over. Birch introduces a smoky, leathery character that feels closer to a worn jacket than a department store counter. Oakmoss adds depth and a dry green bitterness. Ambergris and musk smooth everything into a warm, skin-like close.
Cultural impact
It's a long story sits within Smell Frankly's 2025 Collection 1, a lineup of multiple fragrances with a straightforward naming approach. The naming convention, fragments and phrases rather than invented words, carries the brand's plainspoken sensibility. Within the collection, this composition leans toward the darker, more textured end of the range, grounded by birch, oakmoss, and musk, while still holding enough fruit and citrus up top to stay approachable.
