The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Oud Tobacco arrived in 2023 from Sense Dubai. Its brief feels clear in the name and the official description: black pepper and saffron open with a raw edge, then citrus adds a clean lift. Saed al Abbass is credited as the perfumer behind the composition. There isn't a documented origin story beyond that, but the structure speaks clearly. This is a fragrance built around contrast, placing bright bergamot and tangerine beside deep oud, tobacco, rose, incense, and soft woods. As the opening settles, the citrus loses some of its sharp brightness and takes on a warmer, more textured character. The floral notes add polish without overwhelming the darker materials, while oud and tobacco lend the composition depth.
The unusual part is the handoff between materials that usually live in different fragrance worlds. Citrus peel and sharp pepper bring a flash of daylight, while oud and tobacco bring weight, resin, and smoke. Carnation, hyacinth, and rose otto keep the middle floral and a little tense. Down below, benzoin, labdanum, ambergris, frankincense, patchouli, vetiver, and birch give the composition a dark, woody architecture, with vanilla and tonka bean polishing the edges.
The evolution
It starts with a clean spark: bergamot and tangerine cut through black pepper and saffron, making the opening feel almost citrusy and architectural. As those notes soften, rose otto, carnation, and hyacinth bring a polished floral pulse. Then the composition drops lower. Tobacco, oud, patchouli, sandalwood, and vetiver create a dense woody floor, while benzoin, labdanum, frankincense, and ambergris add resinous warmth. Vanilla and tonka bean keep the final stretch smooth rather than stark. Over time, the opening citrus gradually settles into the darker center of the fragrance. The floral notes remain distinct but become more integrated, moving between rose's softness and the sharper textures of carnation and hyacinth. Tobacco and oud add a smoky, woody depth, while patchouli and vetiver make the base feel earthy and dry.
Cultural impact
Oud Tobacco brings together a vivid set of fragrance materials in a dense, unisex composition. Bergamot and tangerine provide a bright opening against black pepper and saffron, followed by rose otto, carnation, and hyacinth. Tobacco, oud, patchouli, sandalwood, and vetiver deepen the center, while benzoin, labdanum, frankincense, ambergris, vanilla, and tonka bean add warmth and smoothness. The result is a fragrance that balances freshness with smoke, floral detail, resin, and polished wood, giving the named materials room to interact rather than standing apart.
The House
Sense DubaiSense Dubai is a fragrance house rooted in the United Arab Emirates, known for a numbered collection of perfumes released in 2015 that range from No. 1 through No. 10. The brand positions itself within Dubai's growing niche perfumery scene, a city that has become an active hub for both Arabic and international scent creation over the past two decades. Sense Dubai's straightforward naming convention and simultaneous launch of an entire lineup suggest a house interested in building a coherent olfactory universe rather than scattering one-off releases across many years.
The Creator
Saed al AbbassAl Abbass composes with a builder's instinct, layering dense resins and woods against softer florals to create tension and warmth. Oud anchors many of his constructions, treated as architecture rather than ornament.
