Why it exists.
The beginning
Scotch & Soda Men arrived in 2019 as the first gender-specific expression within the Barfly collection, which had established the brand's fragrance identity six years earlier. Where Barfly leaned unisex and adaptable, the men's variant took a more deliberate stance: warm spice, vanilla, and a creamy woody heart that felt specifically at home on skin that wasn't trying too hard. The 2019 launch timing positioned it alongside the women's counterpart, giving the Barfly family a complete wardrobe. Robertet composed the scent with the same logic that drives Scotch & Soda's clothing: the best pieces aren't statement items. They're the ones you reach for without thinking.
The pairing of tonka bean and vanilla sits at the center of this composition, but it's not dessert-sweet. Nutmeg and cardamom keep the warmth grounded before the drydown arrives. Cashmere wood is doing something interesting here as a heart material, offering a soft woodiness that bridges the spiced opening and the sweet base without either side dominating. It's a composition that understands restraint, or at least the performance of it.
The evolution
The opening hits fast. Cardamom and tarragon arrive together, almost herbal-spicy, bright before the bergamot settles and the whole thing softens. Then the heart takes over. Nutmeg and cashmere wood blend into something creamier, warmer, with geranium adding a slight green lift that stops it from going flat. Vetiver is the quiet anchor throughout the mid-section, keeping everything with both feet on the ground. The drydown is where tonka and vanilla do their work, sweet and warm but not loud, softened further by musk.
