The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sawalef was founded in 2013 in the UAE with a clear mission: to translate centuries of Arabian scent traditions into contemporary niche fragrances. The house operates quietly, without the heavy marketing machinery of larger brands, letting the craftsmanship speak for itself. Empire arrived in 2018 as a statement of grandeur, drawing on the same heritage that shaped the house's founding principles. The fragrance was designed to echo the sweep of historic empires across the Arabian trade routes, where precious materials like saffron and sandalwood moved through markets as currency and ritual both. Sawalef built this scent to serve collectors who want narrative and craft in equal measure, without resorting to spectacle.
The note selection reflects a deliberate choice to combine precious and grounding materials. Saffron, one of the most expensive spices in perfumery, carries cultural weight in Arabian traditions and immediately signals luxury. The warm spices that follow, nutmeg and cardamom, echo the markets and kitchens of the Gulf, grounding the precious saffron in something more familiar. Orange blossom in the heart introduces a floral element that cuts through the spice, preventing the composition from becoming too heavy. The choice of labdanum over more common amber materials reflects the house's preference for resinous depth over synthetic sweetness.
The evolution
The opening is immediate: saffron arrives with its signature bitter-sweet intensity, followed quickly by nutmeg and cardamom to complete a trio of warm spices. This phase is designed to capture attention, the spices are chosen for their vividness rather than their subtlety. As the heart develops, orange blossom introduces a clean floral element that creates a striking contrast with the spiced opening. Labdanum adds a sticky, resinous warmth that bridges the two phases, while patchouli grounds the florals with earthiness. By the time the drydown arrives, the composition has shifted entirely: sandalwood forms the creamy backbone, vanilla sweetens the base, and leather delivers the final statement. The progression from spice to florals to woods follows a classic structure, but the materials chosen, particularly the saffron-leather pairing at the end, give Empire a character that feels both recognizable and distinct.
Cultural impact
Since its 2018 debut, Empire has been embraced by fans of modern Arabian perfumery for its seamless blend of spice, white floral and leather. Reviewers often cite its ability to feel both regal and wearable, making it a staple for autumn evenings and unisex wardrobes. Its balanced sillage and moderate longevity have placed it alongside other contemporary Gulf-inspired classics, reinforcing Sawalef’s reputation for crafting scents that honor tradition while speaking to today’s global audience.
