Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Sawalef begins in 2013, when a group of Emirati entrepreneurs set out to create one of the first niche perfume houses based in the Gulf. Their goal was to translate the region’s centuries‑old olfactory traditions into a format that could travel beyond local markets. Early on the founders secured a modest production facility in Dubai, allowing them to experiment with native ingredients while maintaining control over quality. By 2018 the brand introduced its first public fragrance, Anaqa, followed shortly by Oud Maktum and Retal. These early releases signaled a commitment to rich, resinous notes and earned the house a modest following among regional connoisseurs. In 2020 Sawalef expanded its distribution network, partnering with select boutique retailers across the Middle East and Europe. The expansion coincided with a refinement of its scent architecture, as the house began to blend traditional oud with synthetic accords to achieve greater stability and projection. A milestone arrived in 2022 when Sawalef opened its first standalone boutique in Abu Dhabi, offering customers an immersive experience that combined scent discovery with curated interior design. The following year, 2023, marked the most prolific release period in the brand’s history, delivering eight new fragrances—including Obsession of Oud, Madly in Love, Angel Spirit, Majestic Amber, Scent of Seduction, Sawalef Oud, Glamorous Bloom, and others—bringing the total catalogue to 24 scents. Throughout its evolution, Sawalef has remained a privately held company, reinvesting profits into research, ingredient sourcing, and the development of a distinctive visual language that reflects its Arabian roots.
Sawalef’s creative vision rests on a dialogue between past and present. The house believes that perfume should honor the rituals of Arabian scent making while embracing the precision of modern chemistry. Its values emphasize authenticity, sustainability, and craftsmanship. Authenticity drives the selection of raw materials; the brand seeks out oud wood harvested from mature trees in the forests of Assam and the Hajar Mountains, ensuring that each source respects local ecological practices. Sustainability informs packaging choices, with recycled glass and minimal plastic components becoming standard. Craftsmanship is expressed through a collaborative process that brings together regional scent artisans and international perfumers, allowing the brand to fuse indigenous aromatic vocabularies with contemporary techniques. Sawalef also prioritizes education, offering scent workshops that teach participants about the cultural significance of ingredients such as amber, rose, and frankincense. By maintaining a transparent development cycle, the house invites its audience to witness the evolution of a fragrance from raw material to finished bottle.
