The beginning
Seth Kornegay built Oud Oriental, a composition that leans into oud's warmth without demanding the wearer perform alongside it. The fragrance centers on the agarwood note, treating it with a restraint that allows its natural richness to emerge on its own terms. What results is a scent that feels considered rather than calculated, letting the woody depth speak while surrounding it with complementary elements that support rather than overshadow.
What makes this composition unusual is its restraint. Oud naturally carries a medicinal, almost barn-like intensity that many houses amplify deliberately. Kornegay went the other direction, softening the agarwood with sandalwood, adding a whisper of floral in the opening that disappears within minutes, letting amber hold the warmth without adding weight. For an oriental built around one of perfumery's most assertive materials, that's a genuine achievement.
The evolution
The top arrives clean, a brief flash of something bright, almost aldehydic, before the oud settles in. That opening lasts maybe fifteen minutes. Then the sandalwood takes over, and the composition softens into what reviewers consistently describe as velvety. There's rose in the heart, though it never announces itself; think of it as the color of the drydown rather than a distinct phase. The amber doesn't arrive so much as accumulate, layering beneath the oud until the entire composition reads as warmth without edge. Eight to ten hours later, on fabric especially, the oud persists, quieter than it started, but unmistakable.
Cultural impact
Oud Oriental arrived during the peak of the oud wave, when Western houses were still discovering the material's potential. Rather than compete on intensity, Kornegay chose a different lane, a softer, more wearable interpretation that made oud accessible to people who wanted the prestige without the projection anxiety. The fragrance hasn't been reformulated or discontinued officially, though finding it outside specialist retailers requires some effort.
