Why it exists.
The beginning
Azimuth is Royal Crown's 2017 composition by Antonio Martino Visconti, the perfumer behind the house. The brand describes it as a journey down the Bosphorus, surrendering to the mysterious charm of the East, with a gaze caught by the glitter of gold minarets lost in the ruins of the Old Ottoman Empire. Visconti translated that vision into a woody composition built on oriental barks, mystical incense, and golden balsams. The composition reads as a navigation of sorts: incense and resin opening into a dense heart of black orchid and leather, then resolving into oud and sandalwood at the base. Visconti structures the scent in clear registers, each tier carrying a distinct temperature.
What makes Azimuth unusual is the seaweed absolute in the opening, placed beside frankincense and thyme. That combination of marine and resinous elements creates a distinctive tension, as if the cool salt of low tide were meeting the dry heat of church incense in the same breath. The heart of black orchid, leather, and metallic notes adds another strange edge. Metallic notes in a fragrance this smoky read like the tang of old brass or the smell of rain on heated copper, a sensory intrusion that keeps the incense from going purely devotional.
The evolution
Frankincense and cardamom set the altitude within the first five minutes, while the seaweed absolute threads underneath like a low tide smell, brine mixed with crushed herbs. Thyme sharpens the edges, almost medicinal. By the thirty-minute mark, the marine note has mostly receded, replaced by black orchid and leather. The metallic accord lifts everything slightly above the skin, a cold hum under warmer tones. Patchouli enters around the two-hour mark, darkening the leather without burying it. From hour three onward, the base settles into its final shape: Burmese oud and Mysore sandalwood close together, with patchouli holding the structure. The oud is present but not loud, smoky rather than animalic. The sandalwood carries a creamy density that rounds off the sharper edges left behind by the metallic heart, lending the late stages a smooth, polished quality.

Azimuth is a quiet entry in Royal Crown's catalogue, the kind of fragrance that surfaces in collector circles rather than in department store rotations. Its unusual use of seaweed absolute in a composition otherwise built around oud, incense, and resin gives it a distinctive profile that distinguishes it from more conventional releases in the house's own line.
