The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The Elysium Collection began in 2017, when Roja Dove released the original Elysium Pour Homme, an aromatic fougère that became one of the house's most recognized fragrances worldwide. 'An iconic word in the perfume world,' reads the official copy, 'Elysium has remained an international success since launching in 2017.' Six years later, the house returned to that accord. The directive was clear: take what made Elysium work and push it further. The result is Eau Intense, a more refreshing experience that amplifies the citrus opening and deepens the woody base while keeping the floral-fruity heart intact. It translates the original's paradise of crystal waters and cloudless skies into a more concentrated form, as if the air itself had been compressed.
What makes this composition interesting is the way it handles freshness without sacrificing complexity. A typical fresh fragrance strips down to citrus and calls it done. Elysium Eau Intense opens bright, grapefruit, lime, bergamot, rhubarb cutting through in quick succession, but immediately begins layering in complexity. The herbal quality from artemisia and thyme prevents the citrus from reading as casual. The blackcurrant and apple in the heart add a fruity sweetness that doesn't veer into dessert territory. The white florals, Grasse jasmine, tuberose, rose de mai, provide depth without warmth.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart, grapefruit and lime arriving first, with bergamot underneath and rhubarb adding a vegetable-like sharpness that sets it apart from standard citrus openings. Artemisia and thyme arrive shortly after, giving the top notes an herbal backbone that keeps the freshness from feeling casual. As the citrus begins to recede, the heart opens gradually, blackcurrant and apple emerge alongside the white florals, bringing a fruity sweetness that balances the preceding tartness. Jasmine and tuberose are present but controlled, adding sophistication rather than sweetness. Orange blossom and lily of the valley keep the heart clean and slightly green, preventing the fruity notes from becoming too lush. The base deepens over time, led by cedarwood and vetiver with leather and black pepper providing warmth and bite.
Cultural impact
Elysium Pour Homme launched in 2017 and quickly became an international reference point for Roja Dove's vision of masculine refinement. The fragrance established the house's ability to balance fresh aromatics with depth and complexity, a combination that proved enduring. When ROJA London returned to that accord in 2023, the house sought to build on the original's success. Eau Intense takes the citrus-fruity-floral heart and woody base of the original and amplifies the freshness while maintaining the complexity that made the original compelling.
