The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Kingdom of Bahrain was commissioned as an official scent for the Kingdom of Bahrain, a rare honour that speaks to Roja Dove's standing in haute perfumery. Released in 2017, it became the house's most ambitious ambergris-forward composition. The brief was simple: something worthy of a kingdom. What Roja delivered was a fragrance built on contrast, bright citrus at the opening, ambergris warmth at the close, with enough complexity between to reward hours of wear. The island nation's position as a gateway between East and West informed the composition's duality: crisp and Mediterranean at first, then increasingly warm, animalic, and opulent as it settles.
The note count alone signals ambition. Fourteen base notes, ambergris, birch, pine, oud, leather, cedar, patchouli, vanilla, tonka bean, saffron, pink pepper, cashmere wood, cotton candy, cypress, suggest a perfumer who refused to leave anything out. But the structure is disciplined. The citrus top doesn't compete with the ambergris; it introduces it. The florals, violet, May rose, Grasse jasmine, bridge the two without dominating. What makes the composition interesting is the cotton candy in the base. It's a peculiar choice in a serious fragrance, and it creates an unexpected sweetness that prevents the ambergris from becoming austere.
The evolution
The opening is all business. Lime, lemon, bergamot, and clary sage arrive together, sharp and green. Bay leaf adds an herbal dimension that keeps the citrus from feeling like a body spray. This phase lasts forty minutes to an hour, clean, crisp, citrus-forward. Then the florals take over. Violet brings powdery softness. May rose from Grasse adds classic elegance. Jasmine rounds the heart with creamy warmth. The handoff is smooth but unmistakable: bright exits, warm enters. By hour two, the ambergris announces itself. Not subtly. This is the note the fragrance was built around, and it anchors everything that follows. Birch and pine add smoky depth. Leather and cedar create a woody, almost leathery foundation. Cotton candy provides unexpected sweetness, a reminder that this is Roja Dove's house style, not a serious exercise. Vanilla, tonka bean, and saffron wrap the base in warm spice. By hour four, the fragrance settles into its most intimate phase: close to the skin, animalic without being aggressive, lasting another four to six hours on most skin types.
Cultural impact
Reviewers call Kingdom of Bahrain the best ambergris perfume in Roja Dove's portfolio, high praise given the acclaim surrounding Elysium and Diaghilev. The fragrance has been discontinued, which has only increased its appeal among collectors seeking the house's most animalic expression. It enjoys a loyal following among enthusiasts who appreciate its complexity and animalic depth, earning deep respect for its ambitious composition.
