The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Reminiscence was founded in 1970 on the sun-kissed promenade of Juan-les-Pins, turning the French Riviera into a scent archive. Each fragrance functions as a scented postcard, turning travel memories into something you can wear. In 2009, perfumer Zoe Coste extended the house narrative with Eau de Patchouli, a fragrance that strips patchouli down to its most elemental form before wrapping it in unexpected warmth. The choice of Zoe Coste as the nose behind this scent speaks to Reminiscence's commitment to letting raw materials speak for themselves.
The philosophy behind Eau de Patchouli is one of contrasts. Patchouli, often associated with the 1960s and 1970s counterculture, is presented here in a form that is both traditional and surprisingly modern. The inclusion of bourbon vanilla and tonka bean in the drydown creates an unexpected pairing that softens the earthy patchouli without diminishing it. This is patchouli for those who appreciate the note but want something more than its raw, unadorned character. The sandalwood and labdanum serve as intermediaries, bridging the gap between earth and warmth with elegant precision.
The evolution
The journey of Eau de Patchouli begins in the opening phase with patchouli taking center stage, its earthy, almost dirty character softened only slightly by the dry, pencil-shaving quality of cedarwood. As time passes, the heart notes of labdanum and sandalwood emerge, transforming the fragrance from something austere into something approaching cozy. Labdanum adds an amber, sticky warmth that acts as a bridge between the earthy opening and the sweet, vanillic drydown. By the time bourbon vanilla, tonka bean, benzoin, tolu balsam, and white musk arrive in the base, the fragrance has completed its evolution from wild earth to refined warmth.
Cultural impact
Wearers often describe Eau de Patchouli as the scent of a quiet confidence, a grounded elegance that doesn’t demand attention but leaves a subtle trail. It has become a go‑to for those who appreciate patchouli without the oily heaviness of older classics, positioning it alongside the house’s earlier Elixir Patchouli while standing out for its lighter, more luminous drydown.
