The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Ezra Woods and Alia Raza built Fauna around a single conviction: animalic notes don't have to shout. The composition uses castoreum and tonkin musk to achieve something that reads as alive, a fragrance that seems to breathe on its own. The result is a scent that doesn't project so much as it surrounds, warm and close, the kind of presence you notice when someone leans in to speak rather than across the room. Launched in 2015 as a fait main extrait, Fauna arrived quietly and stayed that way, finding its people among those who prefer their fragrance to ask questions rather than answer them. The castoreum brings a deep, resinous quality while the tonkin musk adds a soft, enveloping texture that lingers close to the skin.
What makes Fauna unusual is the restraint that runs underneath the animalic notes. Coffee blossom and night-blooming flowers step in to soften the edge, adding a floral dimension that keeps the composition from becoming aggressive. The result is a musk that doesn't behave like a musk, warm but not heavy, present but not demanding. The castoreum and tonkin musk work together to create a sense of depth that feels alive. There's a delicate balance at play here, with the florals providing just enough softness to temper the animalic warmth without erasing it.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and clean, bergamot and petitgrain with a citrus sharpness that catches attention without demanding it. Within minutes, the heart takes over. Coffee blossom arrives first, slightly bitter, almost green, before the night-blooming flowers and saffron layer in to create a warm middle ground. The castoreum doesn't announce itself. It builds quietly beneath the florals, adding an animalic depth that transforms the composition into something that feels less like perfume and more like presence. As the fragrance develops, the drydown settles into Laotian oud and white musk, with tonkin musk, barley, and nuts anchoring everything into a warm, close finish that stays intimate and skin-adjacent for hours. This is a fragrance that rewards patience, not because the opening is difficult, but because the evolution is worth watching.
Cultural impact
Fauna developed a devoted following among collectors who prize the house's experimental edge. Among niche and art-world adjacent fragrance communities, Fauna sits alongside the more talked-about releases from houses like D.S. & Durga and Zoologist as a reference point for compositions that don't apologize for being strange. The fragrance represents a commitment to unconventional vision, standing apart from more traditional approaches to perfumery. Its distinctive character has made it a touchstone for those who appreciate bold, boundary-pushing work in the niche fragrance space.
