The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Sassique arrived in 1988 from Regency Cosmetics, a house known as the makers of Jade East. The composition is a floral-fruity women's scent built around plum, jasmine, and a warm amber-vanilla base, with the fragrance landing squarely in the generous, fruit-forward register of its time. The structure opens with bright citrus and ripe plum, a powdery white-floral heart follows, and a creamy sandalwood-amber foundation anchors everything underneath. There is a fullness to the way the notes are layered, each one given enough room to register without crowding the next. The plum carries real weight at the top, sweet and slightly syrupy rather than tart, while the jasmine in the heart reads full and almost indolic, the kind that announces itself in a room.
What makes the structure interesting is how the fruit is handled in the opening. Plum and apple sit alongside lemon and tangerine, creating a top that reads sweet-edged and rounded. The citrus sharpens the plum's natural sugar rather than competing with it, and apple adds a green-crisp dimension underneath. The jasmine and rose in the heart are full and present, with sandalwood showing up earlier than expected in the structure, already warming the base while the florals are still in front.
The evolution
The first 15 minutes are the loudest. Plum, tangerine, and lemon hit at once, the kind of bright, sweet-fruity opening that announces itself before you've left the bathroom. The citrus sharpens the plum's natural sugar rather than competing with it. Apple adds a green-crisp edge underneath. Around 30 minutes in, the white florals arrive. Jasmine leads, and it's a full-bodied jasmine, the indolic kind, sweet and slightly creamy. Rose adds a soft, almost soapy facet. Sandalwood surfaces earlier than expected, already warming the base while the florals are still in front. This is where Sassique shifts from fruit cocktail to something more composed. By the two-hour mark, the top is gone. What's left is jasmine and rose sitting on a bed of sandalwood, amber, and vanilla. The musk keeps it close to skin.
Cultural impact
Sassique arrived in 1988 from Regency Cosmetics, the same house responsible for Jade East. It's a floral-fruity women's fragrance built around plum, jasmine, and a warm amber-vanilla base, and it wears with the kind of generous sweetness that defined women's fragrance of its era. The opening is bright and fruit-forward, with plum, tangerine, lemon, and apple all present at the top, followed by a full white-floral heart of jasmine and rose. Sandalwood shows up earlier than expected, already warming the base while the florals are still speaking, which gives the heart a creamier shape than the notes list alone might suggest.
