The beginning
Sandalwood + Bergamot arrived in 2020 from Steve Soderholm, the perfumer behind Ranger Station. The composition came together from a background steeped in hands-on experimentation, a path defined less by formal training and more by a willingness to learn directly through the work itself. What sets Sandalwood + Bergamot apart from the moment you press the nozzle is the way it reads as a complete olfactory statement built from so few ingredients. The opening carries bergamot and other citruses sliced against the green, rooty snap of vetiver, a combination that feels bright and almost breezy before settling into something far weightier.
What makes this composition worth noticing is how few notes it uses to land so hard. Soderholm limited the palette to citruses, vetiver, and white musk up top, a heart of redwood, cedar, and Australian sandalwood, and a base of smoke and incense. The opening spark of bergamot against vetiver feels almost sparkling, a sharp citrus edge tempered by the earthy green rootiness beneath it.
The evolution
