Why it exists.
The beginning
Arturetto Landi built Art 09 Karo Karounde around a single, often-overlooked flower: karo karounde, a blossom notable for its unusual character among naturals. Released in 2017 as part of his numbered Art series, the composition showcases that rare material within a broader floral architecture. The idea was to build a white floral bouquet that didn't rely on the usual suspects, and to let karo karounde's distinctive sweetness steer the whole structure. By wrapping it in ylang-ylang and orchid, Landi shaped a creamy, dense-floral reading that makes the flower stand out even alongside more conventional white floral materials. The result is a composition that puts an unfamiliar bloom at the center of attention rather than letting it slip past as a supporting accent in the blend.
What sets this composition apart is the tension between the floral heart and the fruit-sweetened opening. Karo Karounde balances its bouquet against a generous pour of strawberry and pineapple at the top, and those fruits do real work in the formula. They soften the sometimes-bruising intensity of tropical florals and make the whole thing wearable rather than overwhelming. The fruit notes settle into the florals rather than vanishing, lending a sugary jamminess to the early stages that lingers beneath the petals.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are almost jammy. Blackcurrant and pineapple arrive with a sugary edge, strawberry rounding it out until the whole opening reads like a fruit compote served warm. The shift into the heart is where the composition earns its reputation. Ylang-ylang takes the lead, but it's the karo karounde underneath that gives the middle phase its distinctive creamy density, with orchid adding a waxy, skin-adjacent softness. There's an animalic warmth lurking below the petals, more suggestion than statement. The base doesn't so much arrive as settle. Vanilla softens everything that came before, ambergris adds a saline, ambered warmth, and vetiver grounds the blend without darkening it.

Profumi d'Art (also known as Art Landi Profumi) is an Italian house whose Karo Karounde, their Art 09 release, has gathered attention among niche enthusiasts who appreciate its bold fruit-forward opening and the unusual character of the karo karounde flower at its heart. Because the house operates on a small scale and several earlier releases from the Art series are now discontinued, the available bottles move through a narrow set of channels and tend to surface only occasionally in collector circles.
