What makes the note structure work is the vanilla execution. Sweet orange and grapefruit open bright and fizzy, aquatic notes add that cool-water freshness, and black pepper keeps the citrus honest. The heart, heliotrope, pear, peony, could easily go powdery and old-fashioned. It doesn't, because the pear keeps it juicy and the peony stays delicate rather than blowsy.
