The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
The name promises wilderness. What arrived in 2019 was something warmer and closer, an oriental floral built for the skin rather than the room. Mathilde Bijaoui composed To Be Exotic Jungle as part of Police's To Be collection. This one took the collection's sweet-fruity vocabulary and grounded it in suede and patchouli alongside the plum that opens the scent. The contrast is the point. Opening bright and assertive, the plum quickly softens as florals arrive, but the suede keeps everything grounded, preventing the fragrance from floating away into abstraction.
Heliotrope absolute is the hinge. It sits between the fruity top and the warm base, adding a powdery softness that could tip the whole composition into generic territory, except the suede keeps it honest. Osmanthus brings a faint apricot leather quality that bridges the florals and the base notes. Jasmine stays present but never overwhelming. The result is a fragrance that smells expensive without trying too hard, sweet without being syrupy, and warm without being heavy.
The evolution
The opening hits plum and blackcurrant first, bright, almost candied, softened by lemon's citrus edge. It reads like a fruit salad for the first twenty minutes. Then the heliotrope arrives, shifting the composition toward powdery florals. The jasmine surfaces here, sweet and green. By the second hour, the suede emerges, dry, slightly animalic, unexpected against the sweetness that came before. Patchouli and vanilla carry the drydown from hours three through six, wrapping the composition in warmth that stays close to the skin. On some wearers, the suede lingers into the next day, faint and intimate against fabric.
Cultural impact
To Be Exotic Jungle For Woman arrived in 2019 as part of Police's broader To Be collection. The fragrance opens with plum and blackcurrant, bright and candied, before revealing florals in the heart. Suede and patchouli anchor the composition, with vanilla providing warmth in the base. The combination of fruity sweetness with earthy materials creates a scent that moves from playful opening to grounded finish, offering a different trajectory than fragrances that stay in the sweet-fruity register throughout.
