The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Makeda takes its name from the legendary Queen of Sheba, a figure of mystery and regal allure. When Alexandre Helwani set out to craft the scent for Parfumers du Monde in 2021, he wanted a perfume that echoed that ancient majesty while honoring a thoughtful approach to ingredients. The result uses natural materials that balance opulence and restraint, anchored by mastic resin and osmanthus blossom alongside labdanum absolute and tobacco leaf. The effect is warm, layered, and undeniably luxurious without ever feeling loud or ostentatious.
Osmanthus and tobacco represent a rare combination outside niche and high-end releases, which makes Makeda's use of both at its price point noteworthy. The mastic and pink pepper in the opening serve a dual purpose, creating aromatic freshness that makes the floral heart feel approachable rather than dense, and providing enough brightness to keep the entire composition from becoming too heavy. The vanilla and sandalwood in the base do not overpower but rather support the tobacco and labdanum, creating a drydown that feels complete without exhausting itself on sweetness.
The evolution
The opening announces Makeda's character with mastic and pink pepper lifted by mandarin and bergamot, a clean and aromatic combination that commands attention in the first hour. Within thirty minutes the osmanthus and rose emerge as the citrus fades, with orris root and ambrette adding powdery and musky depth that rounds the heart into something intimate. By the third hour the labdanum, vanilla, sandalwood, and tobacco take over, creating a warm and smoky drydown that lingers close to the skin and defines the fragrance through the evening.
Cultural impact
Makeda has captured attention for its distinctive resin-sweet profile that distinguishes it within the landscape of contemporary fragrances. Its complex composition, balancing delicate floral heart notes against a warm, aromatic foundation, offers a nuanced experience that shifts throughout the day. The interplay of tobacco and vanilla in the drydown provides a subtle edge, appealing to those who appreciate depth and character in their scent choices. As part of the house's collection, Makeda represents the brand's commitment to intricate perfumery that draws from diverse aromatic traditions.
