Why it exists.
The beginning
Dark Wood arrived in 2014 as part of Oriflame's Men's Collection, shaped by perfumer Dora Baghriche into an Oriental Woody that trades showy sweetness for something more composed. It reads woody and warm, a scent built around guaiac wood, cedar, and sandalwood in the middle, cushioned by cashmeran, and topped with a measured hit of black pepper. The opening carries a bright lift from mandarin and cypress, giving the whole composition an airy snap before the heavier notes settle in. Cashmeran anchors the formula with its dry, almost suede-like warmth, bridging the sharper top notes with the creamy woods underneath. The result is an accessible take on dark, woody territory, the kind of fragrance that feels deliberate without tipping into something dense or overpowering.
The structural choice worth noting here is cashmeran doing some of the heaviest lifting alongside the traditional woods. Cashmeran's dry, musky warmth creates a bridge between the guaiac and cedar, giving the heart a soft, almost fabric-like texture that keeps the composition from feeling austere. The evolution
On skin, the first ten minutes are the loudest. Black pepper cracks against the mandarin's brightness, with cypress threading a green, resinous note underneath. It's sharp in a friendly way, like cold air through an open window. By the thirty-minute mark, the citrus has folded back and the heart takes over. Guaiac wood arrives first, bringing a dry depth with a faintly smoky edge, then cedar rounds it out while sandalwood gives the whole thing a creamy softness. There's a wood-paneled-library quality here, warm but not sweet, the kind of scent that feels more contemplative than assertive. As the hours pass, ambrox and blond tobacco settle in close to the skin, with the tobacco restrained, more suggestion than statement, and a faint citrus lift in the base that keeps things from turning heavy. The projection softens gradually, pulling inward rather than fading into nothing.
