The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Philippine Courtière created Royal Incense in 2020 as an olfactory tribute to Oman's incense heritage. Courtière chose Omani frankincense as the foundation, then layered honey and leather around it, materials that give the fragrance substance and depth. The result is a fragrance that carries the weight of tradition without sweetening the smoke into something unrecognizable, letting the resinous character lead throughout its development.
The composition pairs frankincense with honey and leather, building warmth through these materials rather than relying on smoky accords alone. Leather and cedar hold everything together without introducing any harshness, creating a smooth transition from the brighter top notes down through the deeper base. The honey adds a golden warmth that settles over the resinous base, while the leather and cedar provide structure that keeps the fragrance grounded and cohesive.
The evolution
The opening announces pink pepper's presence immediately, bright, slightly sweet, gone within minutes. Then the hand-off: geranium and lily arrive together, the florals keeping the warmth from drifting into abstraction. They don't linger either. What replaces them is the point. Incense and honey deepen in tandem, the smoke threading through the sweetness rather than competing with it. Leather, cedar, and vetiver build the base layer by layer. The drydown holds, intimate, present. Vetiver and musk keep it close. Ambergris adds a quiet animal warmth underneath everything, creating a foundation that lingers on the skin.
Cultural impact
Royal Incense stands apart in the niche fragrance world with its resinous, smoky character that doesn't compromise. Among comparable incense-forward fragrances like Matière Première's Encens Suave and Amouage's Opus XII - Rose Incense, it offers a distinct take through the floral and honey facets that temper the smoke. The fragrance appeals to those seeking an authentic incense experience, drawing wearers who appreciate its direct approach to the material.
