The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Routes Nomades launched in 2021, part of Ojar's Frankincense Collection, and the name hints at motion, at something carried rather than fixed in place. The composition was shaped by Nanako Ogi, whose hand leans into structure and restraint rather than sweetness. What sits in the bottle is a deliberate conversation between geography and craft. Incense has been burned across the region for centuries, traded along routes that crossed continents, and built into rituals where smoke carries meaning. Routes Nomades reads as one chapter of that longer story: less about spectacle, more about a specific kind of warmth that belongs to the landscape, something weathered and sun-warmed rather than ornamental.
The structure here earns attention. Cypress and ginger open with a clean, almost architectural sharpness, then cardamom warms the edges before the heart fully arrives. What makes the composition distinctive is the pairing of ylang-ylang, often used for sweetness, against cinnamon leaf and vetiver, which push it toward something drier and more smoked. The base closes with frankincense, leather, and patchouli, a trio that anchors the whole thing without flattening it. It's not a crowd-pleaser. It's a study in restraint, with each note doing one job and doing it precisely.
The evolution
The first thirty minutes are almost clinical: ginger lifts, cypress sharpens, cardamom adds that hot-skin warmth. Then ylang-ylang flickers underneath, briefly floral, before cinnamon leaf and vetiver pull the whole thing earthward. By hour two, the leather starts to speak, and the smoke around it thickens rather than fades. Frankincense and patchouli carry the back half. On fabric the next morning, the incense is still there, dry and resinous, like something left in a wooden box. The progression feels intentional, almost choreographed, with each phase handing off cleanly to the next. The spices announce themselves without shouting, then retreat to let the woods take over, and the resins arrive last as the foundation rather than the opening statement.
Cultural impact
Routes Nomades wears into a specific kind of quiet confidence. It's the fragrance for someone who reads more than they announce, who values the hour after the dinner party over the entrance. Wearers gravitate toward it for cooler months and intimate settings, where its smoky restraint reads as taste rather than caution. The incense character is what defines it, but it's the restraint around that incense that makes it wearable. Where some resin-forward fragrances lean so hard into the smoke that they become almost devotional objects, Routes Nomades keeps its powder and leather notes close, balancing the sacred with the sensual.
