The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Iris N' Wood arrived in 2019 from Birkholz's Berlin manufactory, where every fragrance begins as a personal memory made wearable. Philip Birkholz composed this one as a study in contrast, powdery iris against structural woods. The idea: make them coexist without either drowning the other. Years of testing followed. The iris needed to be graceful, yes, but also durable. The woods needed to support without overwhelming. What emerged is a fragrance that holds its line, iris in the air, cedar beneath it, neither one apologizing for existing.
The interesting part is what iris and wood do together. Iris carries a natural coolness, powdery, slightly metallic, almost mineral. Sandalwood and cedar are warm, even creamy. The combination could have tipped either way. Birkholz kept it honest: cardamom and cumin in the opening add aromatic depth without aggression. The heart stays restrained. By the drydown, it's composed, not cold, but definitely not trying to please everyone in the room. Powder and wood, holding their ground.
The evolution
The opening announces itself quickly. Grapefruit zest gives way to cardamom's warmth and cumin's earthiness, the citrus fades fast, but the spice lingers. Within minutes, the iris arrives. Clean. Powdery. Lily of the valley threads through, green and delicate beneath the floral. Cedarwood builds underneath, giving the composition somewhere to stand. The heart holds for about an hour before the drydown begins, sandalwood, cashmere, musk. Soft. Warm. Long. On fabric, the sandalwood becomes more pronounced. On skin, the musk stays closer. Either way, six to eight hours of presence without ever becoming loud.
Cultural impact
Iris N' Wood occupies a particular corner of the fragrance world, for those who want powder and wood without choosing between them. The unisex appeal is genuine; the composition is refined enough to stand apart from heavier woody-orientals without being precious. Birkholz is a young independent house finding its voice, and this fragrance is one of their clearest statements.
