The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Roman Vetiver joined Oakcha's Barbershop Collection in 2024, a line that aims to embody the essence of a classic barbershop experience with fresh cuts and soothing aftershaves. The name points to vetiver as the structural backbone, a root note that does the heavy lifting in the drydown, while the fruit and spice around it shape what barbershop can smell like. The opening hits with eucalyptus, bergamot, and lemon, a crisp, clean first impression that smells like cold tonic splashed across hot skin. A slice of apple rounds out the top, adding just enough sweetness to keep the citrus from turning sterile.
What makes this composition worth a second look is the tension between the eucalyptus-bergamot-lemon opening and the plum-cinnamon-coconut heart. The citrus trio at the top reads sharp and clean, almost bracing, before the fruit and spice roll in and shift the temperature. Plum brings a dark, jammy quality. Coconut adds a creamy, milky sweetness that you don't typically find in a barbershop composition. Cinnamon threads through the heart with a low, warm heat, and sandalwood gives the whole phase a soft, woody weight that makes the middle feel grounded rather than fleeting.
The evolution
The opening belongs to the citrus: bergamot, lemon, and a sharp lift of eucalyptus that reads almost medicinal, like a clean cut. Apple softens the edges just enough to keep the first impression from feeling clinical. Soon after, plum and coconut arrive together, and the whole thing shifts. The eucalyptus retreats. Cinnamon adds a low heat. Sandalwood gives it weight. This is the phase that smells completely different from the opening, almost like two fragrances stacked on top of each other. The sweetness of the plum and coconut rounds out the spice, and the sandalwood smooths the transition into the base. As the composition settles, patchouli and vetiver take over. The sweetness pulls back. What remains is warm amber, vanilla, and a clean musk that sits close to skin without ever projecting aggressively. The next morning, a faint trace of vanilla and vetiver lingers on the collar.
Cultural impact
Roman Vetiver arrived in 2024 as part of Oakcha's Barbershop Collection, a line built to embody the essence of a classic barbershop experience with fresh cuts and soothing aftershaves. The composition leans on vetiver as its anchor, a root note with a long history in masculine grooming traditions, and surrounds it with a mix of citrus, fruit, spice, and soft woods. The opening of eucalyptus, bergamot, and lemon gives the scent that crisp, just-showered feel, while the plum, coconut, and cinnamon in the heart add an unexpected softness and warmth.
