The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
Nazareno Gabrielli's I'm Not series began as a provocation, a pair of fragrances that announced themselves with names no traditional Italian house would touch. I'm Not A Good Boy arrived in 2022, a citrus aromatic that leans into irony without sacrificing craft. The name suggests a wink, a confession, a man who knows exactly what he's doing. That's the starting point. From there, the composition does the rest of the talking. Citrus opens the conversation. Herbs complicate it. Tobacco settles it.
The heart is where this fragrance earns its name. Mint, lavender, sage, geranium, tarragon, eight materials that could easily cancel each other out. Instead, they arrive in waves, taking turns to dominate before ceding ground to the next. It's controlled chaos, the olfactory equivalent of someone who says the right thing while clearly meaning something else entirely. The base anchors everything in warmth: sandalwood, cedar, vetiver, tobacco. By the time you reach the drydown, the mischief has softened into something that lingers.
The evolution
The opening hits immediately. Bergamot and pink grapefruit arrive bright and unapologetic, with neroli adding a faint floral edge that keeps it from reading as merely clean. Thirty minutes in, the herbs begin their argument. Mint cuts first, sharp and cool, then lavender softens the edges, then sage and tarragon introduce a green, slightly bitter complexity that shifts the composition into something less predictable. By hour two, the citrus has receded and the heart dominates, still aromatic, still fresh, but with more weight. The drydown is where this fragrance earns its name. Tobacco arrives quietly, wrapping around cedar and sandalwood, with vetiver adding a dry, slightly smoky finish. Musk keeps everything close to the skin. The entire arc takes 4-6 hours on most skin types, with sillage that remains moderate, present without announcing itself. This is not a fragrance that fills a room. It's a fragrance that gets noticed when you lean in.
Cultural impact
The fragrance sits within Italy's long tradition of bold citrus compositions while subverting expectations with its cheeky name and irreverent positioning. The playful branding suggests a willingness to poke fun at traditional masculine fragrance marketing. This approach reflects a broader shift in the industry toward approachable, unpretentious scents that don't take themselves too seriously. The name 'I'm Not A Good Boy' works as both a joke and a statement of confidence that resonates with younger consumers seeking something different from classic masculine fragrances.
